Thank you! This was so helpful! I understand now why I have such a hard time getting rid of smooth bromegrass. It's native to Europe and an invasive rhizome here. Since it's growing below the surface you don't know how it's spreading. At least with runners (stolons) you can catch them before they root or use landscape fabric to deter them from reaching the soil.

I would have had far more respect if you had done it with flint and steel, bullrush fluff is a favourite of mine, though I treat it with potassium nitrate so it will take a spark straight from flint and steel, so I don't have to worry about the char cloth.
